Having done some genealogy work, about 80% of my ancestry is from the UK, even though I have a Dutch name.

Growing up in a white Protestant family, many of my ancestors were Masons. I am now Catholic. I’m struck by the depth of ancestral culture in many Catholic families. I never experienced that. Thank you for explaining Día de los Muertos. It’s very helpful for me.

There's always the opportunity to discover our heritage, no matter what our upbringing was like. As Dr. Damian Costello says, we all have ancestors who were indigenous to somewhere.

From my paternal grandmother, who was half Native American and half Spanish, I learned that silence is powerful. When I needed to feel loved and supported, we would just sit on the steps outside her kitchen and neither of us had to speak to communicate. I still feel her presence in my life.
